Australian shoppers are spending billions of dollars each year without even leaving home, as the internet marketplace hits new highs.
Ac Nielsen research shows that Australians spend $8.3 billion each year online.
Consumer electronics and cosmetics/beauty categories are two of the fastest growing areas in online shopping, with 20 percent of internet users buying electronics online and 11 percent snapping up cosmetics and perfume.
More than five million Australian internet users shop online, and the proportion of regular online shoppers rose from 66 to 78 percent in the six months to June 2005.
Ebay, a 10 year old online auction firm, has grown into an economy in its own right. It boast more than 150 million registered users worldwide, buying and selling goods expected to be worth more than $52 billion this year.
